LESSON 2.50
Misused Words That
Begin with the Letter L

Levee vs. Levy

A levee is a dike or other structure built to raise the height of river banks.

The town built a levy along the Mississippi, but it could not hold back the flood.

To levy means impose a tax, often for schools.

The school needed a new roof, so the city council passed a special levy.

Loathe vs. Loath

To loathe means to hate.

Cranston loathed fruitcake.

Loath means “reluctant.”

Juanita was loath to attend the skating party.

Lose vs. Loose

To lose means not to win.

The Galligar Gators never thought they would lose to the Trentwood Tigers.

Loose means the opposite of tight.

A dog’s collar should be loose enough to get your hand under it.
