Luxembourg
Grades 5+
Between France, Germany, and Belgium, lies the small landlocked country of Luxembourg.
Stretching a mere 50 miles at its greatest distance, Luxembourg is only two-thirds the size of Rhode Island, the smallest state in the United States.
The country has greatly benefited from its location, which gives it easy access to European markets. It has a highly developed financial sector, is home to many investment funds, has a highly skilled workforce, a favorable tax environment, and a stable political environment. As a result, Luxembourg has become one of the richest nations in the world.
The country has not always enjoyed such a rosy life. The Germans seized the country during both World War I and World War II. Luxembourg saw some of the fiercest fighting during both wars, including the Battle of the Bulge during WWII, when the Nazis surrounded American troops, who refused to surrender and eventually won the battle. Over 5000 American troops, including war hero General George S. Patton, are buried outside the city of Hamm.
