LESSON 1.1
Parts of Speech in Traditional Grammar – Part I
Traditional grammar and GGS use most of the same words for the parts of speech, but the definitions differ.
Name | GGS | Trad Grammar Definition | Trad Grammar Extended definition |
Noun | the ___ named __
| A person, place, thing, or idea | Any member of a class of words that typically can be combined with determiners to serve as the subject of a verb, can be interpreted as singular or plural, can be replaced with a pronoun, and refer to an entity, quality, state, action, or concept. |
Problems w/ Trad Gram | Students often think of words such as she, everyone, it, and here as nouns. They reason that she and everyone are persons, it is a thing, and here is a place. GGS eliminates those errors. | ||
