Barter vs. Haggle

Barter means to purchase something with items or services. 

Jimmy bartered with Melissa: His backpack for her X-Men comic book.

Haggle means to negotiate a price.

Angela went into the used car dealer ready to haggle for the car she wanted.

Born vs. Borne

Born means to be birthed.

I was born the day the Twin Towers were attacked.

Borne means to carry something, especially disease.

Bubonic plaque was borne by ticks.

Breath vs. Breathe

Breath is a noun that refers to an inhale or exhale.

The parents were thrilled at their baby’s first breath.

Breathe is a verb that refers to an inhale or exhale.

I kept inwardly saying, Breathe! as I fought to revise the drowning victim.

Buy vs. By vs. Bye

Buy means to purchase something.

I would like to buy a dog, please.

By means to be close to something or to indicate who did something.

To think, I was standing by a masterpiece painted by Picasso.

Bye is short for “goodbye.”

Say bye to the island as we take off.
